UMVA has learned that a major telecommunications company has taken swift action to support emergency communications in regions devastated by a recent earthquake.
In the aftermath of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, the company has partnered with a leading satellite technology provider to deploy a satellite-to-mobile service. This groundbreaking technology will enable customers to send messages via WhatsApp and SMS, a vital lifeline during a time of crisis.
The deployment, which marks the company's first use of this technology for disaster response in the Philippines, is expected to benefit over 700,000 customers. In a bid to provide critical support to affected communities, the company will offer the service free of charge for up to 30 days, until its network is fully restored.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the earthquake prompted widespread network disruptions across multiple provinces, affecting around 30 municipalities. The company is working closely with local government units and electric cooperatives to fully restore its services in badly hit areas.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the satellite deployment complements the company's broader disaster response efforts across Mindanao. The initiative is a significant step towards strengthening network resilience and providing communications support during times of crisis.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the company's customers will be contacted directly to receive instructions on how to connect to the satellite service using their existing SIMs and LTE-enabled phones. This move is expected to bring hope and relief to those affected by the disaster.
The company's swift response to the disaster demonstrates its commitment to supporting affected communities and providing vital communications services during times of need. With this innovative technology, the company is poised to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those impacted.
