A quiet night on the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus shattered early Tuesday morning with a deliberate act of arson. Around 12:55 a.m., a vehicle became the target, engulfed in flames ignited by an unknown individual.
The fire caused substantial damage to the vehicle, leaving investigators to piece together the events of the night. Thankfully, despite the destructive nature of the incident, no one was injured in the blaze.
Toronto Police quickly launched an investigation, releasing images of a suspect to the public on Wednesday morning. The response was swift, and an arrest was made shortly after the suspect’s description circulated.
Omari Douglas, a 27-year-old Toronto resident, now faces serious charges. He is accused of arson with disregard for human life, alongside two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, and mischief causing over $5,000 in damage.
Douglas was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre Wednesday morning to address the charges. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather information surrounding the incident.
