The Bureau of Corrections transferred 600 inmates from Metro Manila facilities to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm. The move is part of a broader effort to decongest the New Bilibid Prison and prepare for its eventual closure.
On July 7, 500 male inmates from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa were relocated, alongside 100 female inmates from the Correctional Institution for Women. Both groups were moved to the Davao complex in a single coordinated operation.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang, Jr. oversaw the transfer, which involved 150 personnel from the two correctional facilities. The staff ensured the inmates’ safe and orderly movement, and the female prisoners will be housed in the CIW unit within the Davao Prison and Penal Farm.
The relocation aims to alleviate the chronic overcrowding that has long plagued the New Bilibid Prison. It also advances the bureau’s preparations for the prison’s eventual shutdown.
