ALLWYN WINS: Lottery Power Grab SHOCKS UK!

ALLWYN WINS: Lottery Power Grab SHOCKS UK!

A colossal legal battle, fueled by a £1.3 billion claim, has reached its conclusion with a decisive victory for the Gambling Commission. Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell and The New Lottery Company challenged the 2022 license award, arguing the bidding process was fundamentally flawed and unfairly denied them control of the National Lottery.

The core of their argument rested on alleged “serious mistakes” made during the contest and the belief that subsequent changes to the license terms necessitated a complete restart. However, Mrs Justice Smith emphatically rejected every facet of their claim, declaring the competition both lawful and fair. She found no evidence of a critical error that would have altered the outcome.

The judge didn’t stop at simply dismissing the claim; she also sharply criticized the claimants’ handling of the case. Describing their approach as “apparently unfocused,” she highlighted a pattern of abandoned arguments, even during closing statements. This “moveable feast,” she stated, was “inexcusable” given the substantial legal resources at their disposal.

The court underscored the immense value at stake – a ten-year exclusive license to operate a globally recognized lottery, representing a potential revenue stream exceeding £1 billion. This isn’t merely a business deal, but a custodianship of a deeply ingrained national institution.

The National Lottery’s impact extends far beyond entertainment, having channeled over £50 billion to vital “Good Causes” through more than 650,000 awards as of June 2025. This funding has touched countless lives and supported a vast array of community projects across the country.

This legal fight has cast a long shadow over the transition of the National Lottery since Allwyn was named the preferred bidder in 2022. The formal handover in February 2024 marked the end of Camelot’s thirty-year reign, a legacy beginning with the lottery’s 1994 launch.

Desmond’s companies maintained they had invested millions in their bid and were unfairly excluded, but their arguments failed to resonate with the court. This was just one chapter in a broader legal saga, as Camelot and its technology partner, IGT, had previously launched their own challenges to the license award.

The judgment carries significant weight beyond the courtroom, particularly for Allwyn, which has faced scrutiny regarding its ability to deliver on promises made during the bidding process. Reports surfaced last year suggesting the Gambling Commission was considering enforcement action due to missed milestones in technology upgrades and modernization efforts.

Allwyn attributed these delays to the complexity of replacing aging systems and the disruptive influence of the ongoing litigation. The company has committed over £350 million to overhaul the National Lottery platform, with a stated goal of increasing contributions to Good Causes.

This ruling effectively removes a major legal obstacle for Allwyn as it navigates these operational challenges. It also provides the regulator with increased confidence as it oversees the current license and future investment strategies.

The Gambling Commission hailed the outcome as a validation of the competition’s integrity, allowing the focus to return to the National Lottery’s core mission. Allwyn echoed this sentiment, stating the judgment definitively closes the door on years of allegations surrounding the award process.

Despite the court’s decision, Desmond’s companies have signaled their intention to appeal, suggesting the battle may not be entirely over. The future of the National Lottery, however, appears to be on a more stable footing.
