German-born British actress Antoinette Bower has died at the age of 93. The star was best known for her roles in science fiction, particularly in the iconic television series Star Trek and The Twilight Zone.
Bower played the seductive, catlike alien Sylvia in Star Trek, and appeared alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in the 1980 mystery slasher film Prom Night. Her death was confirmed by her friend, Carlotta Glackin, who is the great-niece of Golden Age actor Edward Everett Horton.
Bower died on April 30 in an Eagle Rock retirement home in Los Angeles. Her career spanned four decades, beginning in television in 1958 when she moved to Canada to pursue acting.
During her early years, Bower scored recurring roles in Hudson's Bay and Heritage, and even showcased her talents by writing, producing, and narrating a profile of actor Barry Morse for CBC Radio. She later landed her first American series role in a 1961 episode of Hong Kong.
Bower frequently appeared on American television, with credits including major projects such as Columbo, Murder, She Wrote, and the mini-series The Thorn Birds. Her work on Star Trek: The Original Series' season 2 episode Catspaw earned her praise, with some ranking it as one of the 'scariest' episodes from the franchise.
Bower's film career included roles in Death of Innocence, Die Sister, Die!, The Cowboy and the Ballerina, The Evil That Men Do, and Club Paradise. She completed her lengthy performing career by returning to Canada and joining the cast of Neon Rider for three seasons.
In her personal life, Bower was married to American artist James Francis Gill, a Pop Art pioneer she met in Los Angeles in 1962. The couple married in 1968.
