UMVA has learned that a 50-year-old Florida woman was brutally mauled to death by two pitbulls with a history of terrorizing the neighborhood and biting people.
The victim, Jodi Cowan, was walking her dog on Tuesday when the two pitbulls attacked her, leaving her with severe injuries. Her husband, Donnell Smith, witnessed the horrific scene and described it as "brutal," saying he saw the dogs "dragging" his wife down the street.
Smith recounted the traumatic moment, saying he pulled out a knife and tried to save his wife, but she was severely injured and had to be airlifted to the hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The image of his wife being ripped apart by the two animals has left him shaken, saying he'll never get it out of his mind.
The two pitbulls were known to the local authorities and had a reputation for terrorizing the community, with neighbors expressing fear of leaving their homes due to the dogs' presence. A neighbor revealed that surveillance cameras captured the gruesome attack on video.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deadly dog attack. The incident occurred on Blue Bonnet Drive near Cocoa, where the pitbulls belong to a neighbor.
Smith described his wife as a great woman who loved people and dogs, and expressed his outrage that she met such a tragic end. He had returned home shortly after 1 a.m. and realized Cowan and their dog had disappeared, then heard a faint cry for help.
Smith found Cowan lying in a pool of blood with bites all over her body, and the dogs attempted to drag her away from him. He managed to fend them off with a knife, but the injuries were too severe, and she couldn't be saved.
The investigation into the deadly dog attack is ongoing, and the community is left to grapple with the tragic consequences of the pitbulls' actions.
