UMVA has learned that a dramatic incident unfolded in Liberty Village on Wednesday morning, as a truck collided with a rail bridge, severing overhead power lines and disrupting the 504 King streetcar route.
The chaos erupted shortly after 8 a.m. at the intersection of King St. W and Atlantic Ave, east of Dufferin St, where the truck's impact cut off power to the streetcar lines, forcing the TTC to divert the 504 King streetcar. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but commuters were advised to seek alternative routes to avoid the area.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the diversion of the 504 King streetcar route was necessary to ensure commuter safety, with the 504A streetcar being diverted at Shaw St to Queen St W, en route to Dundas West Station, and the 504B route taking a detour along Queen St W between Shaw St and the Dufferin Loop.
Crews rushed to the scene to assess the damage, which was extensive enough to warrant the deployment of shuttle buses between Roncesvalles and Strachan Aves, providing an alternative for stranded commuters. The incident has left many wondering when repairs will be completed, but so far, no estimated timeline has been provided.
As the investigation into the incident continues, commuters are bracing themselves for potential disruptions to their daily routines, highlighting the importance of a reliable and efficient public transportation system. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges involved in maintaining a vast network of streets, bridges, and rail lines.
