London Turns to Scorching US Desert City for Insights on Mitigating Extreme Heatwaves

The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, has revealed a new plan to protect the capital from extreme heat as temperatures soar across the UK and Europe. The plan, titled 'Heat Ready London', aims to equip the city to deal with frequent and extreme heatwaves.

Londoners have been experiencing the brunt of the heat, with sweltering temperatures causing flash flooding and stranding trains. The UK recorded its hottest ever June temperature on Wednesday, with the mercury rising to 35.7C south of London. The Mayor has stated that London is not equipped to deal with the heat, citing global warming as a major concern.

The solution, according to Sir Sadiq, lies in learning from other cities that have been dealing with heatwaves for decades. He mentioned Phoenix, Los Angeles, Paris, and Milan as examples of cities that have implemented successful measures to combat the heat. These include painting roofs a certain color to reflect heat, using AI and algorithms to predict wildfires, and expanding access to green and blue spaces.

Heat Ready London focuses on six key sectors: the built environment, business and economy, emergency preparedness, resilience and response, health and care, green space and nature, and infrastructure. The plan sets out 37 areas of focus, including expanding access to cooling spaces and public drinking water, adapting the highest risk homes to protect the vulnerable, and improving the resilience of critical infrastructure such as travel.

The plan also prioritizes those in poorer areas, as their access to parks and gardens is limited. Sir Sadiq has stated that it is not just an issue of the environment, but of social justice. In the 2022 heatwave, London saw 400 premature deaths, 4,000 people going to A&E, and extreme challenges to the public transport system.

A fully air-conditioned London Underground network is still a long way off, but Sir Sadiq expressed hope that it may become a reality in the future. In the meantime, the plan aims to retrofit buildings with air conditioning and improve access to green and blue spaces.

The Heat Ready London plan is a crucial step towards protecting Londoners from the effects of extreme heat. By learning from other cities and prioritizing those in need, the plan aims to make London a more resilient and sustainable place for all.
