Plans have been revealed for a monumental arch, envisioned at 250 feet tall, intended to grace the landscape near the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. The structure is designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, a bold statement etched against the backdrop of the Potomac River.
The proposed arch, crafted from white marble, will feature a striking centerpiece: a winged golden Lady Liberty statue soaring above. Flanking her will be two majestic bald eagles, also rendered in gold, symbolizing strength and freedom. Near the apex of the arch, the phrase “One Nation Under God” is planned for inscription.
The design echoes the grandeur of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, a monument originally commissioned to celebrate French military victories. This inspiration suggests a desire to create a similarly powerful symbol of national pride and achievement.
A model of the arch was first presented at a White House fundraising dinner, alongside plans for a sprawling, $400 million ballroom. This ballroom project, however, has faced legal challenges, with a federal judge halting construction until congressional approval is secured.
The judge emphasized the need for explicit congressional authorization, noting the President could still pursue the project with private funding. Despite this setback, the administration has appealed the ruling, determined to move forward with its vision.
Adding another layer to the ambitious project, it was revealed that a “massive complex” is being constructed beneath the planned ballroom by the U.S. military. The President described the ballroom as essentially serving as a protective structure for this underground facility, hinting at advanced capabilities including drone technology.
The Commission of Fine Arts, a federal design panel, is currently reviewing the arch’s design. Their assessment will be a crucial step in determining whether this ambitious vision will become a reality, reshaping the iconic skyline of the nation’s capital.
