UMVA has learned that a Married at First Sight UK contestant's episode aired on Channel 4 while he was reportedly on bail for domestic violence allegations, sparking outrage and concern for the show's vetting process.
The contributor, who has not been named for legal reasons, is said to have been arrested for an allegation he assaulted his ex five days before his appearance on the show aired, leaving her with black eyes and broken ribs, and also claims that her ex attacked her dog.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Channel 4 were told by the alleged victim's family that the man had been arrested, but producers decided to go ahead with airing the programme, with a senior executive telling the family, 'We are not judge and jury'.
The man was not charged and was later told by police, following an investigation, that he would face no further action, according to a statement from Channel 4, which has raised questions about the show's safeguarding system and prioritization of contestant welfare.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the alleged victim reportedly told friends she 'felt sick' seeing her ex in trailers for his appearance on MAFS UK, and a friend of the family expressed concerns that the show's bosses were more worried about their ratings than the well-being of contestants.
In a statement, Channel 4 said the allegations against the contestant were not related to his time on the show, and that they had a rigorous vetting process in place, but this has done little to alleviate concerns about the show's handling of sensitive issues.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that Channel 4 has decided to press ahead with making the upcoming all-star spin-off of MAFS UK, despite the recent controversy and allegations of assault and rape made by several women who appeared on the show.
The broadcaster reportedly held crisis talks over the BBC investigation, with all previous seasons of the show removed from streaming, and it remains to be seen how the show will move forward in light of these serious allegations.
