UMVA has learned that beloved actor Anthony Head has passed away at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy of iconic roles and a family that adores him.
Head, famous for his portrayal of librarian Rupert Giles in the cult classic series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, died peacefully surrounded by his family due to complications from pneumonia, just six months after the loss of his long-time partner, Sarah Fisher.
His daughters, actresses Emily and Daisy Head, confirmed his death, sharing a heartfelt statement that read: "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father, Anthony Head. He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family."
Throughout his illustrious career, Head appeared in some of the most iconic TV shows and films, including Ted Lasso, Little Britain, Merlin, and Doctor Who, showcasing his incredible range and talent as an actor.
As a regular cast member in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Head played Rupert Giles from 1997 to 2003, becoming an integral part of the show's success, and his character's wit and wisdom continue to captivate audiences to this day.
In the comedy-drama series Ted Lasso, Head played the role of Rupert Mannion, the ex-husband of Hannah Waddingham's character Rebecca, showcasing his versatility as a comedic actor and leaving a lasting impact on fans.
Head's acting CV includes other notable roles in some of the most iconic programmes and movies, such as Little Britain, where he played the Prime Minister, and The Inbetweeners, where he appeared as Will's father.
A singer as well as an actor, Head was known for his distinctive baritone voice and appeared in the West End, recording music, including the album of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer musical episode, as well as solo endeavours that showcased his incredible talent.
Tributes have been pouring in for the late actor, with Buffy icon Sarah Michelle Gellar paying a heartfelt tribute, saying: "Tell Giles I figured it out and I'm ok. Well I don't have it figured out and I'm not ok. But I know I'm the lucky one because I knew you."
Co-star Brett Goldstein described Head as "infinitely charming and kind and fun and a joy," adding that he will be sorely missed, while screenwriter Russell T Davies remembered Head as "a lovely man" who could "twinkle" and shared a heart-warming anecdote from set.
