A beloved downtown dessert destination has abruptly closed its doors. Choco Choo, a popular spot known for its decadent Belgian chocolate creations, was shuttered on March 26th following a damning health inspection.
The closure wasn’t due to a single issue, but a cascade of eleven infractions uncovered by Toronto Public Health. Inspectors discovered conditions so concerning they issued a summons and a health hazard order, forcing the shop to cease operations immediately.
At the heart of the problem was a fundamental failure to maintain sanitary conditions. The inspection report detailed a premise adversely affecting the overall operation, creating a breeding ground for potential health risks.
Beyond the general unsanitary state, critical violations involved the improper storage of potentially hazardous foods. Temperatures were found to be within a danger zone – between 4°C and 60°C – creating ideal conditions for bacterial growth.
The issues extended to basic hygiene practices. Hand-washing stations weren’t readily accessible to food handlers, and waste wasn’t removed frequently enough to maintain cleanliness. Utensils weren’t sanitized with the necessary regularity, raising further concerns.
Pest control also emerged as a significant problem. The establishment failed to adequately protect against pests, and crucially, lacked records demonstrating any preventative measures had been taken.
Even seemingly minor details contributed to the overall picture of neglect. Inspectors noted failures to prevent pest entry and maintain a sanitary food-handling room. A missing license during the inspection added another layer to the violations.
The situation has been escalated, with a referral made to Municipal Licensing and Standards. Currently, the reopening date for Choco Choo remains uncertain, leaving customers wondering when they can once again indulge in their favorite treats.
The closure serves as a stark reminder of the importance of rigorous health standards in the food service industry, and the potential consequences of failing to uphold them.
