A quiet January morning in Vaughan shattered as bullets struck a parked car, the sound echoing through the neighborhood near Madeira Ave. and Genoa Rd. around 5 a.m. Investigators quickly determined this wasn't a random act; at least two individuals were involved in the brazen shooting, leaving residents shaken and searching for answers.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the Vaughan incident, but the investigation remained open, a puzzle with crucial pieces missing. Detectives meticulously gathered evidence, hoping to identify those responsible for the unsettling act of violence.
Just weeks later, on February 15th, a similar scene unfolded in Toronto, this time near Weston Rd. and Lawrence Ave. W. A dispute escalated, culminating in the discharge of a firearm and the swift arrest of a suspect at the scene.
Police recovered a loaded 9-mm handgun during the Toronto arrest, a discovery that would soon prove pivotal. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Harty, was immediately charged with a series of firearm-related offenses, including discharging a weapon with intent to wound.
A collaborative effort between York Regional Police and their Toronto counterparts revealed a stunning connection. Harty was identified as a suspect in the January shooting in Vaughan, and the handgun seized in Toronto was determined to be the very weapon used in the earlier incident.
Now facing a multitude of charges in York Region – including possession of a restricted firearm, unauthorized possession, and mischief over $5,000 – Harty’s alleged involvement paints a disturbing picture of escalating criminal activity. The damage to the vehicle alone exceeded $5,000.
While Harty is in custody, the investigation remains active as authorities continue their search for the second suspect involved in the Vaughan shooting. The pursuit of justice continues, aiming to bring all those responsible to account for their actions.
Anyone with information regarding the outstanding suspect is urged to contact the York Regional Police Firearms Investigations Team. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers, offering a confidential avenue for those with knowledge of the case.
