GALUNGGONG FLOOD: Prices About to PLUMMET!

GALUNGGONG FLOOD: Prices About to PLUMMET!

A surge of silver has flooded the Navotas Fish Port Complex. The arrival of the galunggong – round scad – harvest in March nearly doubled the volume compared to the previous year, signaling a remarkable recovery for this vital fish stock.

Numbers tell a compelling story: 16,165.52 metric tons of galunggong arrived in March, a dramatic leap from the 8,161.92 metric tons recorded just a year before. This isn’t simply a fluctuation; it’s a testament to carefully considered strategies taking root.

The replenishment began with a deliberate pause. A closed season, enforced between November and January, allowed the galunggong population to rebuild. Favorable conditions for fishing vessels further aided the recovery, creating an ideal environment for the harvest.

However, the ocean’s complexities are never fully predictable. Environmental shifts, including those linked to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, likely played a role in influencing fish migration patterns and ultimately, the impressive catch rates observed.

Within the overall haul, shortfin scad dominated with 9,731.68 metric tons, closely followed by bigeye scad at 6,433.84 metric tons. These figures paint a picture of a thriving ecosystem responding positively to protective measures.

Years of dedicated fisheries management are now bearing fruit, according to officials. The consistent application of seasonal fishing bans, a policy implemented over the last decade, is directly linked to the observed increase in fish stocks and the stability of landings.

The challenge now shifts to preserving this success. Investment in crucial infrastructure – cold storage, efficient logistics, and improved post-harvest facilities – is paramount to minimizing waste and maximizing the benefits of the abundant catch.

Sustaining this positive trend requires a holistic approach. Strengthening the supply chain will not only reduce losses but also guarantee higher quality fish reaches consumers, ultimately improving the livelihoods of everyone involved.
