A chilling incident unfolded at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a black-tie event attended by President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President Vance, when a man opened fire at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night.
The attack, carried out by 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California, quickly prompted a wave of reactions – and, disturbingly, a surge of conspiracy theories questioning its authenticity.
Actress January Jones, known for her role in “Mad Men,” ignited controversy by suggesting the incident was a fabricated attempt by the Trump administration to escape a perceived social obligation. Her post, shared on social media, sarcastically offered a “service” for those seeking to avoid unwanted gatherings.
The post was widely condemned, particularly by those who saw it as a callous disregard for the seriousness of the event and a dangerous minimization of violence. Critics pointed to a troubling pattern of dismissing attacks against Trump and his supporters as manufactured.
Jones wasn’t alone in promoting the conspiracy. Actress Mia Farrow also voiced suspicions, questioning whether the attack was orchestrated to artificially inflate the President’s approval ratings.
Law enforcement officials have presented a starkly different picture. Allen, identified as a teacher and participant in anti-Trump protests, breached security armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives.
Minutes before the attack, Allen sent a 1,000-word manifesto to family members, declaring himself the “Friendly Federal Assassin” and detailing his grievances with Trump’s policies, along with virulent animosity towards Christians and the administration.
The swift response of the Secret Service prevented a tragedy. One agent was struck by gunfire but protected by a bulletproof vest and is currently in stable condition. President Trump and all other attendees emerged unharmed.
Allen is now in custody, facing charges of attempted assassination and multiple federal offenses. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for violence and the rapid spread of misinformation in the wake of such events.
