UMVA has learned that a shocking series of emails has exposed the chaotic process behind the UK's gift of a red despatch box to US President Donald Trump during his state visit last year.
The emails, obtained by UMVA, reveal a trail of confusion and incompetence among high-ranking officials as they scrambled to secure the bespoke gift, usually reserved for ministers, and embossed with the presidential seal and title.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the saga began with a message from the then Foreign Office chief, who said the embassy in Washington was clear that a red dispatch box with the gold crest and lettering mimicking a UK Government ministerial box would be a meaningful gift to the president.
However, the process quickly descended into chaos, with officials exchanging urgent emails and messages, including one from a deputy head of mission in Washington, who wrote: "I do think we need to move with some urgency here…"
UMVA has gathered that the situation became so dire that a Downing Street civil servant was forced to seek support and ideas on how to push the gift forward, including potentially involving more senior representation and even Buckingham Palace.
The emails also reveal the frustrations of Lord Mandelson, who described the situation as "like something out of The Thick of It", a BBC comedy that satirizes the inner workings of government, and lamented the "incompetence" of Whitehall officials who had known about the gift since February but failed to act.
As the situation continued to unravel, Lord Mandelson's own role in the drama became increasingly embroiled, with WhatsApp messages revealing his attempts to manage the expectations of other officials and even Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform UK party, whom he was "trying to keep nice without complete success".
The emails ultimately led to the presentation of the red box to President Trump, which was said to "symbolise the special relationship between the UK and US", but the behind-the-scenes negotiations have raised more questions about the competence of those involved and the true nature of the gift.
