LEBANON ON THE BRINK: This "Ceasefire" is a LIE!

LEBANON ON THE BRINK: This "Ceasefire" is a LIE!

The headlines speak of a “ceasefire” between Lebanon and Israel, a seemingly hopeful development for a nation scarred by decades of conflict. But look closer, and a disturbing truth emerges: this isn’t peace, it’s a carefully constructed illusion.

Since 1948, the Lebanese army hasn’t directly engaged Israel in battle. Yet, now, Lebanon is at the negotiating table. The disconnect is stark. The actual conflict isn’t between two nations, but between Israel and a powerful, non-state actor operating within Lebanon’s borders: Hezbollah.

Hezbollah isn’t simply a militia; it’s a state within a state, backed by Iran and deeply embedded within Lebanon’s government institutions. It functions with its own agenda, its own military strength, and its own allegiance to external powers, effectively diminishing Lebanon’s sovereignty.

This situation isn’t accidental. It’s the result of Lebanon’s fractured political system, a structure built on division that has allowed power to continually shift between sectarian groups – Maronite Christians, Sunnis, and now, a Shia bloc dominated by Hezbollah – over the last eighty years.

But Hezbollah represents a dangerous escalation. Unlike previous power centers, it’s a direct proxy of the Iranian regime, possessing both significant political influence and a battle-hardened military force. Its fighters gained extensive combat experience propping up the Assad regime in Syria, a conflict that recently concluded.

Critically, Hezbollah operates with alarming independence. In 2023, it joined the Gaza war without any consultation with the Lebanese government. More recently, it re-engaged as regional tensions flared, again acting unilaterally. These are decisions of war and peace, made not by the Lebanese state, but by an entity operating within it.

This brings us back to the “ceasefire.” The Lebanese government is attempting to negotiate peace in a conflict it isn’t fighting, on behalf of a force it doesn’t control. This fundamental disconnect is consistently overlooked in media coverage, obscuring the true nature of the situation.

The conflict is driven by a force that isn’t accountable to any negotiating table. Therefore, a “ceasefire” isn’t a resolution, but a temporary pause – fragile, and ultimately, unsustainable. This explains the cyclical pattern: escalation, pause, then inevitable escalation again.

For the Lebanese people, this is yet another layer of tragedy. Decades of instability have culminated in a situation where the state no longer controls its own security. The average citizen has no voice in whether their country is at war or at peace, a decision effectively outsourced to an external power.

This isn’t a detached observation. It’s a reality born from personal experience. Growing up in Beirut during the civil war, I witnessed firsthand the consequences of weakened institutions and the rise of armed factions. What we see today is a continuation of that devastating pattern.

The players have changed, but the outcome remains the same. Clarity is essential. Lebanon’s government is powerless unless it confronts Hezbollah militarily. Even then, the outcome is uncertain, and defeat is unthinkable.

Any path forward that ignores this reality will only produce more temporary pauses masquerading as progress. This isn’t peace; it’s managed instability. And the longer we pretend otherwise, the more deeply entrenched that instability becomes.
