UMVA has uncovered a shocking case of identity theft and deception in Brazil, where a 38-year-old woman posed as a 12-year-old girl in hopes of being adopted by a family.
The woman, identified only as Gabriele, used a range of tactics to convince the family that she was a vulnerable child, including claiming to have autism and other medical conditions, and even alleging that she had been subjected to forced hormone treatment in her childhood.
The family, who were part of an evangelical community, fell for Gabriele's ruse and treated her like their adopted daughter for 14 months, providing her with a decorated bedroom, gifts, and even throwing her a 12th birthday party.
But the scheme was eventually uncovered by a family member, who recognized Gabriele from a similar case in 2023.
The woman, whose real name is Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, was arrested and is now facing identity theft and fraud charges. Officers say she has a history of committing similar crimes in other Brazilian jurisdictions.
According to reports, Oliveira has been pretending to be a child for over 15 years, using different aliases and stories to deceive families and gain their trust.
The case has raised concerns about the vulnerability of families to such scams, and the need for greater vigilance and awareness.
Oliveira's false identity and fraud charges have been suspended until she undergoes a mental health evaluation, scheduled for June 26.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of verifying the identities of those in need of help, and the devastating consequences of falling for scams and deception.
