Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cardholders can earn 5% cash back on a set of rotating categories for the third quarter, effective now through September 30.
The categories include electric vehicle charging, gas station purchases, select live entertainment, public transit, and contributions to the United Way. Up to $1,500 in combined spending in these categories earns the higher rate; spending beyond that threshold earns 1%.
Cardholders must activate the categories by September 14 to qualify. Activation is done online by entering last name, the last four digits of the card, and the billing ZIP code.
The mix of categories reflects current consumer trends, with gas and EV charging remaining frequent, live entertainment aligning with summer events, and the inclusion of transit and a charity network marking a new development.
To maximize rewards, users should activate each quarter and use the card for purchases in the designated categories. A reminder can help avoid missing the activation window.
The Freedom Flex offers additional flat‑rate cash back: 5% on travel booked through Chase Travel, 3% on drugstore and dining purchases, and 1% on all other spend. The Freedom card is no longer available to new applicants, but existing holders can continue to use it.
By activating before the September 14 deadline, cardholders can capture 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in qualifying purchases through September 30, after which standard 1% applies.
