Severe Storm Devastates Wisconsin Tourist Area: Three Fatalities, Seven Rescued in Boating Accident

The Fourth of July holiday weekend in southern Wisconsin turned deadly when a storm system swept through the region, causing widespread destruction and tragedy on Geneva Lake.

A powerful storm system began affecting Walworth County at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Friday, resulting in a series of chaotic events, including a boat capsizing on Geneva Lake with multiple people struggling in the water.

Local dispatchers received urgent 911 calls, prompting a swift response from emergency services, including a City of Lake Geneva police boat and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency, which successfully rescued seven people from the water.

Unfortunately, three people could not be saved, and their bodies were later recovered by emergency crews. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, who are believed to be children.

The capsizing incident is currently under joint investigation by the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The storm's impact on the region has been significant, with a surge in visitors to the area on holiday weekends leading to a strain on local resources, including law enforcement and emergency services.

The county's permanent population of approximately 106,000 swells to over 200,000 visitors during these events, putting a heavy burden on the area's infrastructure.

City of Lake Geneva Mayor Todd Krause declared an emergency at 12:18 p.m. in response to the storm's severe effects, including downed power lines, shattered trees, and damaged buildings.

Storm-related injuries have also been reported, leading to diversions at area hospitals due to the high volume of patients.

Regional law enforcement agencies, including the Rock, Kenosha, and Jefferson counties, as well as the Wisconsin State Patrol and DNR, have been called in to assist with response efforts.
