A $20 million oceanfront mansion in Massachusetts became the scene of a violent crime over the weekend, leaving investigators questioning whether the robbery was more than a simple break-in.
The brazen heist unfolded in Beverly, a coastal town northeast of Boston, with a neighbor alerting police around 8:50 a.m. Saturday. Authorities discovered a disturbing scene: a home invaded, a housekeeper brutally assaulted, and a collection of valuable items stolen.
According to police reports, an armed suspect forced entry into the 27,000-square-foot estate, then subjected the sole occupant – the homeowner’s housekeeper – to a terrifying ordeal. She was tied up and left in the garage after being pistol-whipped and physically abused.
Homeowner Thomas Swan III expressed profound distress over the attack, describing the violence inflicted upon his housekeeper as “horrendous.” He emphasized the lasting trauma she has endured, stating she is “truly, truly traumatized.”
The suspect didn’t just steal possessions; they made off with “some very specific and valuable things,” according to Swan. A Porsche was also taken from the property and later recovered by police in a neighboring town, Lynn, Massachusetts.
Bill Daly, a former FBI investigator and counterintelligence operative, believes the details of the robbery suggest the perpetrator had intimate knowledge of the property and its contents. He questions how the suspect knew what valuables to target.
Daly points out a crucial distinction between this case and typical high-value robberies. Unlike the calculated precision often seen in art or gem heists, this incident involved unnecessary violence and a seemingly reckless disregard for subtlety.
“It is interesting in this case that [the suspect] appears to have abused, pistol-whipped and perhaps even dragged the housekeeper by her hair,” Daly observed. “It’s different from the typical method of operation.”
The violent nature of the attack, Daly suggests, hints at a personal element or a lack of sophistication often found in professional, targeted thefts. The suspect’s actions were described as “brazen” and “thuggish,” diverging from the discreet tactics favored by experienced criminals.
Beverly Police and Massachusetts State Police are actively investigating the case, but have released limited information. The focus remains on identifying the suspect and uncovering the motive behind this shocking act of violence.
