Senate Bill 756 proposes a significant update to the state’s casino laws, specifically adding Fairfax County to the list of eligible localities. This move isn’t about simply allowing a casino; it’s about giving the residents of Northern Virginia the power to decide if they want a large-scale entertainment destination in their backyard.
The idea has been simmering for years, fueled by a desire to keep entertainment dollars within Virginia’s borders. Currently, a significant amount of gambling revenue flows to neighboring states, particularly to the MGM National Harbor in Maryland, just outside of Washington D.C.

This project promises to deliver hundreds of thousands of square feet of gaming, hotel, and dining space, alongside a variety of entertainment venues and meeting facilities. Developers predict billions of dollars in economic activity and thousands of jobs over the next decade.
A temporary gaming facility linked to the Petersburg project is already operational, offering a preview of the excitement to come as the full resort takes shape. It’s a tangible demonstration of the economic potential of casino development.
If SB 756 is approved and signed into law, Fairfax County will be the next battleground in Virginia’s casino debate. The ultimate decision will likely fall to the voters, potentially bringing large-scale gaming to the Washington area suburbs for the very first time.
