UMVA has learned that Apple is making a surprising move with its existing iOS 26 operating system, releasing updates and refinements even as the tech community's attention is focused on the upcoming iOS 27.
In a recent development, Apple issued the second iOS 26.6 beta for testing, and subsequently rolled out a new firmware update for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 users, hinting at the company's ongoing efforts to polish and perfect its current offerings.
The new firmware update, bearing the version number 8B41, brings "bug fixes and other improvements" to the AirPods Pro 2, up from 8B39, which was released in March, and 8B40 for the AirPods Pro 3, which were last updated in May, according to information obtained by UMVA.
Users eager to ensure their AirPods are updated can simply place them in the charging case, close the lid, and connect a USB-C cable to a power source, waiting about 30 minutes for the update to take effect, and then check the Settings app to confirm the update.
To verify the firmware version, users can navigate to the Settings app, select their AirPods, and scroll down to the bottom of the settings menu to view the current version number, providing a straightforward way to stay informed about their device's software status.
In addition to the AirPods updates, Apple also released new firmware for its Beats Studio Buds, version 1B211, although no other models received an update in this round of releases, suggesting a targeted approach to addressing specific needs and issues.
As the fall season approaches, Apple is set to introduce a range of innovative features for AirPods with the arrival of iOS 27, including a custom equalizer for personalized sound, Precision Finding with the Find My app, and heart-rate sync for seamless integration with gym equipment, particularly with AirPods Pro 3.
