Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations will close for 22 days beginning July 26 and ending August 16 to accommodate a £20 million upgrade of the line.
Additional weekend closures are scheduled for August 22‑23 and October 10‑11, with different service plans that passengers should verify before traveling.
The works will replace 1,800 metres of track, install 16 new switches and crossings, and upgrade drainage at Waterloo East to maintain line speed and safety.
Platform surfaces at Charing Cross will be rebuilt on new foundations, and structural repairs will be carried out on the 175‑year‑old Hungerford Bridge and its pedestrian link to London Waterloo.
During the closures, no trains will stop at either station. Services will be diverted to Victoria, Cannon Street, Blackfriars and London Bridge.
Passengers are advised to review revised schedules, as first and last train times will change. Tickets can be used on alternative routes, including the Underground, buses, Thameslink services between Elephant and Castle, London Bridge and St Pancras, and Southern services to and from London Bridge and Victoria, without additional cost.
The consolidation of the work into a single 22‑day period, supported by preparatory and follow‑up weekends, aims to reduce overall disruption and improve reliability compared to a series of shorter closures.
