A quiet Saturday morning at a Vaughan synagogue was shattered when an unidentified man aggressively attempted to gain entry. Despite being denied access, the suspect reportedly hurled a stack of papers at security personnel, escalating the situation with a brazen display of hostility.
The incident didn’t end there. Shortly after the attempted forced entry, a disturbing assault occurred nearby. A victim walking on the sidewalk near the synagogue was deliberately blocked and then attacked, suffering facial injuries at the hands of the same suspect.
Police describe the suspect as a male with a dark complexion, between 25 and 35 years old, approximately 5-foot-8 in height. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a beige hooded jacket, a beige scarf, and white running shoes. Investigators are urgently seeking information.
In a separate case, a massive haul of stolen cannabis – valued at over $2 million – was recovered by York Regional Police, along with two illegal firearms. The investigation began with the discovery of a stolen trailer in Mississauga, intended for delivery to multiple dispensaries.
Five men from the Greater Toronto Area were arrested in connection with the theft. Manveer Singh, Sarbjeet Singh, Jaiskavan Malhi, Dilkhab Singh, and Karan Kumar now face a multitude of charges related to theft, firearms, and trafficking. Police believe additional victims may come forward.
A chilling case of child exploitation has also come to light. A 47-year-old man from Whitchurch-Stouffville has been charged with multiple offenses, including trafficking a person under 18 and possessing child sexual abuse material.
The investigation began with a missing youth from Peterborough, last seen entering a grey sedan. York Regional Police quickly located the vehicle and, acting on concerns for the youth’s safety, entered a residence where the young person was found unharmed. Investigators are now seeking potential additional victims and have released the suspect’s photo.
In Burlington, a brazen daylight robbery unfolded at a Royal Bank on Brant Street. A man entered the bank and presented a teller with a note claiming possession of a firearm, demanding cash.
The suspect obtained a small amount of money before quickly exiting the bank. However, swift action by Halton Regional Police led to his immediate arrest outside the building, and all stolen funds were recovered. A black BB gun was also found in his possession.
Stephen Laing, a 50-year-old Burlington resident, has been charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. No one was injured during the incident, thanks to the rapid response of law enforcement.
