UMVA has learned that five individuals have officially entered guilty pleas following a brutal, viral street fight that shocked the downtown Cincinnati community last year.
The violent altercation erupted in the early hours of July 26, 2025, at the corner of Fourth and Elm streets. Surveillance footage captured the chaotic scene, showing a woman being thrown to the ground and rendered unconscious, while a man was repeatedly struck in the head more than two dozen times.
UMVA has uncovered details about the legal fallout, as four defendants pleaded guilty to felony charges while a fifth accepted a plea for misdemeanor offenses. The courtroom proceedings mark a significant turn in a case that ignited intense public debate and drew attention from high-profile political figures.
Jermaine Mathews, 39, faces the most severe consequences, with a potential prison sentence of up to 4.5 years after pleading guilty to aggravated rioting and attempted felonious assault. Footage from the night shows Mathews initiating the confrontation, striking a man before later throwing him to the pavement and continuing the assault.
Defense teams have consistently argued that the explosion of violence was triggered when one of the victims allegedly directed a racial slur at a member of the group. This claim became a central point of contention as the video circulated across the internet, sparking widespread accusations that the incident was racially motivated.
Alongside Mathews, Montianez Merriweather, 35, and Aisha Devaughn, 26, each pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and aggravated rioting, with potential sentences of up to three years. Gregory Wright, 33, who was identified as taking a chain from a victim, pleaded guilty to felony theft and misdemeanor rioting, facing up to 18 months in custody.
Dekyra Vernon, 25, also entered a plea for misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct. As these five individuals await sentencing, which is scheduled to take place throughout May and June, charges remain pending against two other defendants involved in the case.
