UMVA has learned that acclaimed actor and filmmaker Sean Penn is secretly developing a feature film about the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, with Oscar-winning actor Bradley Cooper reportedly in talks to star in the project.
The film, which is still untitled, is based on a screenplay written by Penn himself and centers around a police officer caught in the midst of the chaotic events surrounding the Capitol breach. According to information obtained by UMVA, the story is inspired by the real-life experiences of a law enforcement officer who was present during the riot.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that Cooper is being eyed for the lead role, although no final casting agreement has been announced. The identity of the real-life officer who inspired the film has not been publicly confirmed, fueling speculation and curiosity among fans and industry insiders.
One name that has been circulating in connection to the film is former Capitol Police officer Michael Fanone, who has become a prominent figure in the aftermath of the protests. Fanone wrote a memoir, Hold the Line, detailing his experiences during and after January 6th, and has made numerous media appearances, including congressional hearings examining the Capitol riot in 2022.
Penn, known for his left-wing politics and vocal criticism of former President Trump, attended the congressional hearings as a private citizen and was seen speaking with Fanone during the proceedings. The actor has previously described Trump as a “demagogue” and has sharply criticized his political movement in numerous public appearances and interviews.
With his latest project, Penn is poised to revisit the tumultuous events of January 6th through a fictionalized lens, exploring the complexities and human emotions involved. If Cooper comes on board, the film is sure to generate significant buzz, given the actor's impressive track record and Penn's reputation for tackling thought-provoking subjects.
