The case of Damien and Jessica O'Brien, two Michigan residents, has sent shockwaves across the state as they face decades in prison for one of the most disturbing child abuse cases imaginable.
The couple was charged with second-degree murder after the death of their 7-year-old son, Casper, who tragically passed away last November. In addition to the murder charge, the O'Briens also face torture and child abuse charges.
When police arrived at the couple's Flint Township home after a 911 call, they found Casper bedridden, unable to speak, and living in absolute filth. He weighed a staggering 255 pounds at the time of his passing, and his condition was exacerbated by a heart muscle disease.
The police also discovered the couple's 5-year-old daughter, who was described as being in a state of neglect. According to eyewitnesses, the young girl was running around naked and exhibited behavior consistent with a feral child. She has since been removed from the home and placed in temporary foster care.
Despite the couple's employment and health insurance, neither Casper nor his younger sister received medical care. The fact that Casper was non-verbal and likely on the autism spectrum made it even more crucial for him to receive specialized care, which was tragically neglected by his parents.
Prosecutor David Leyton noted that the couple's actions were particularly egregious, as they were able to seek medical attention for their ailing dog but failed to do the same for their children. "They knew enough to call the veterinarian the very morning the child went into cardiac arrest because the dog was sick," Leyton said. "But yet they don't take the kids to the doctor. Doesn't make any sense to me.
