A former Special Operations Command employee now faces serious federal charges, accused of betraying the nation’s trust by leaking classified information. Courtney Williams, 40, of North Carolina, allegedly jeopardized national security by sharing top-secret details with unauthorized individuals, including a journalist.
The Justice Department alleges that over a three-year period, between 2022 and 2025, Williams engaged in repeated communications – over ten hours of calls and more than 180 messages – with a journalist actively seeking information about her former unit. The journalist explicitly stated the intent to use the information in an upcoming article and book.
Williams possessed a Top Secret security clearance and had signed a legally binding agreement acknowledging the criminal consequences of unauthorized disclosures. Despite this, she allegedly provided classified national defense information, some of which subsequently appeared in the published book and article, directly attributed to her as a source.
The revelations didn’t end with the journalist. Prosecutors also claim Williams made unauthorized disclosures on her personal social media accounts, further expanding the potential damage to national security. The scope of the alleged leaks is deeply concerning to national security officials.
Remarkably, even as the article and book were published, Williams expressed apprehension about the extent of the classified information she had revealed. In a series of messages, she voiced fears of arrest, even citing the Espionage Act and acknowledging a lifelong awareness of the potential legal ramifications.
“I might actually get arrested…for disclosing classified information,” she reportedly wrote to a third party. Another message revealed a stark prediction: “I’m probably going to jail for life.” This chilling admission suggests a full understanding of the gravity of her actions.
Federal authorities have made it clear that such breaches of trust will not be tolerated. The case serves as a stark warning to anyone considering similar actions, emphasizing the severe consequences for compromising national security and endangering those who serve.
The investigation, led by the FBI’s Charlotte field office and Counterintelligence & Espionage Division, underscores the commitment to protecting sensitive information and holding accountable those who violate their oath to safeguard the nation.
