Mayor Dorothy McCabe expressed shock and surprise upon learning of the sniper’s presence, stating she had no prior knowledge of the deployment. She also revealed she was unaware of any intelligence suggesting potential weapons or escalating violence connected to the event.
McCabe has formally requested a meeting with the Waterloo Regional Police Chief, Mark Crowell, demanding a full explanation for the decision to utilize a sniper in a situation she understood to be a manageable public gathering. The incident raises serious questions about transparency and the level of force deemed necessary.
The annual St. Patrick’s Day parties in Waterloo have long been a concern, consistently drawing large crowds to the university district. The area, nestled near Laurier University and close to other educational institutions, has become a focal point for these gatherings.
This year, authorities warned the public to avoid the Marshall St.-Regina St. N. area as the public order unit worked to disperse the crowds. Police presence was significantly increased, alongside municipal bylaw officers, aiming to maintain public safety.
