The cadence of Apple's M-series processor releases is poised to undergo a significant shift, according to a recent report. The change aims to accelerate the delivery of more powerful products to market, meeting the growing demand for improved on-device AI processing.
Currently, Apple follows a predictable release schedule: a standard low-end M chip is launched first, followed by higher-end Pro and Max versions, and occasionally, the highest-end "Ultra" versions. However, sources suggest that Apple is looking to disrupt this pattern with the M7 generation.
The M6 is expected to launch as early as this fall in Apple's entry-level products, but the M6 Pro and Max variants will not debut in the spring as usual. Instead, the company is aiming to fast-track the M7 generation, moving up its release dates by as much as half a year.
This means that products with an M7 processor could arrive as early as the first half of 2027, while the M6 Pro and Max products would typically arrive. The M7 Pro and M7 Max products would then debut in late 2027, followed by the M7 Ultra in 2028.
The shift in release dates is believed to be driven by the growing competition in on-device AI processing. Nvidia's introduction of its RTX Spark chips in Windows laptops has set off a chain reaction, with AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm racing to develop the best chips for consumer AI.
The M7 generation is expected to bring a significant boost to on-device AI performance, with the base M7 featuring memory bandwidth of around 240 gigabytes per second, a 20 percent boost over the rumored 200 GB/sec of the coming M6.
The focus on on-device AI processing is a critical aspect of the M7 generation, with both GPU and Neural Engine performance playing crucial roles. The M6 is alleged to have a new-generation GPU with more cores, an improved Neural Engine, and better performance across all processing cores.
