President Trump expressed frustration on Monday with Republican senators blocking his SAVE America Act in the Senate, stating that he will not sign any bill until it passes.
When questioned about the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, Trump made it clear that his priority is the Save America Act, saying, "When I look at that bill, it's a bill, but when I look at the Save America Act, it's about saving America, and I'd like to have the Save America Act added on." He criticized the four or five Republican senators who oppose the bill, saying, "How do you vote against saving America? The only people that would vote against that are people that are going to cheat in an election."
Trump also took aim at Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, who he claimed has gone against him. "Nobody's done more for Alaska than me. She's Trump deranged. What can I tell you?" he said. He also criticized the Democrats for their opposition to voter identification and proof of citizenship, saying, "The only people that would vote against that are people that are going to cheat in an election."
The housing bill, which aims to boost home supply and prevent large institutional investors from buying homes, cleared the House last Tuesday. However, Trump has signaled that he does not plan to sign the bill, calling it "so unimportant compared to the Save America Act." He described the bill as "a big yawn," adding, "To me, compared to the Save America Act, just about everything is a big yawn."
House Speaker Mike Johnson stated on Monday that Trump is deciding whether to sign the bill or let it become law through automatic enactment. "There won't be a veto," Johnson said. "He's just trying to decide whether he's signing it or not."
Trump also criticized Senate Leader John Thune for not being a strong leader and for refusing to fire the Obama-era Senate Parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough. In response to the Supreme Court's decision allowing unlimited mail-in voting with ballots received after Election Day, Trump named the five Republican Senators opposing the SAVE America Act: Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, Bill Cassidy, and Mitch McConnell, and blasted them for stonewalling the bill.
