Douglas McCain was the eldest of the late senator's seven children, born to Carol Shepp McCain during her first marriage, and was adopted by John McCain in 1966. He kept a low public profile compared to some of his siblings but was widely described by family and friends as warm and generous.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Meghan McCain, Douglas's stepsister, announced his passing in a heartfelt post on social media. She described Douglas as a "truly wonderful, joyful man" who supported her throughout her life, bringing humor and great conversation to every room.

Douglas's obituary reveals that he lived a full life, growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, and enjoying surfing, baseball, and soccer. He graduated from Jacksonville Episcopal High School in 1977 and went on to attend the University of Virginia, where he majored in Systems Engineering and met his future bride, Ashley.
After graduating in 1982, Douglas joined the Navy to learn to fly, spending six years flying A-6 Intruders before beginning a long career with American Airlines. He excelled in his work and found true love, especially after becoming a captain.
