TOMB RAIDER COLLAPSES: £100M Reboot AXED – Is the Franchise DOOMED?

The ambitious reboot ofTomb Raiderfor Amazon Prime Video has temporarily halted production following a reported injury to its star, Sophie Turner. The series, a high-stakes adaptation of the beloved video game franchise, promised a fresh take on the iconic Lara Croft.

Turner, known for her commanding role inGame of Thrones, fully embraced the physically demanding nature of the character. Early glimpses from the Surrey set revealed a hands-on approach to stunts, including breathtaking scenes of her parachuting onto a beach.

Amazon MGM Studio confirmed the pause, stating Turner sustained a “minor injury” and is taking time to recover. While the studio expressed optimism about resuming quickly, whispers from within the production suggest the situation is far more precarious.

Sources indicate the shutdown could last weeks, and some fear the entire project is now at risk. The role of Lara Croft demands an extraordinary level of athleticism, and Turner reportedly pushed herself to the limit during intense training and filming.

Turner herself recently discussed the grueling preparation, revealing months of rigorous training – eight hours a day, five days a week – and the unexpected discovery of a “perpetual back problem.” She openly admitted building the necessary muscle was a significant challenge, given her limited prior workout experience.

The injury raises questions about the future of the series, particularly given the substantial investment already made. Producers now face a difficult decision: wait for Turner’s recovery, or consider recasting a role she’s already deeply inhabited.

This isn’t Turner’s first foray into a demanding action role, but the sheer physicality of Lara Croft appears to have presented unique challenges. The weight of expectation is also considerable, following in the footsteps of previous screen portrayals by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

Despite the setback, Turner had expressed immense enthusiasm for the project, acknowledging the iconic status of Lara Croft and the responsibility of bringing her to life. She emphasized her commitment to the role and her confidence in the creative vision of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is leading the revival.

The series boasts a stellar supporting cast, including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and Celia Imrie, adding to the anticipation surrounding the project. The current pause casts a shadow over those hopes, leaving the fate of theTomb Raiderreboot uncertain.
