NUNS UNDER ATTACK: New York Targets Faith-Based Hospice!

NUNS UNDER ATTACK: New York Targets Faith-Based Hospice!

For over 125 years, a quiet haven has existed in Hawthorne, New York – Rosary Hill Home. Here, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, dedicated women of faith, have offered compassionate care to the poorest of the poor, those facing terminal illness, particularly the ravages of cancer. Their mission is simple: to provide dignity and comfort to those with nowhere else to turn.

What sets Rosary Hill apart isn’t just the skilled nursing care, but *how* it’s given. The Sisters operate entirely on donations, refusing insurance payments, government funding, or fees from patients and their families. It’s a radical act of selfless service, a commitment to treating each individual as Christ himself, regardless of their background or circumstance.

Now, this sanctuary is under threat. A new law in New York, the LGBTQ Long-Term Care Facility Residents’ Bill of Rights, is forcing the Sisters into an impossible position. It demands they compromise their deeply held religious beliefs, or face crippling fines, legal battles, and even the potential loss of their ability to continue their vital work.

Rosary Hill, a serene facility surrounded by landscaped gardens and trees, features a prominent statue and modern architecture against a clear blue sky.

The law dictates that residents must be assigned rooms based on self-identified gender identity, regardless of roommate objections. It mandates access to bathrooms aligning with that identity, the use of preferred pronouns, and even allows for unrestricted consensual relationships among residents – all conflicting with the Sisters’ Catholic faith and the sanctity of the care they provide.

Warning letters have already arrived from the state Department of Health, outlining potential violations and the escalating penalties for non-compliance. Initial fines could reach $2,000, quickly escalating to $10,000, with the ultimate threat of losing their license and facing potential jail time for those deemed willfully defiant.

Mother Marie Edward, the leader of the Dominican Sisters, eloquently stated their predicament: they are being forced to choose between their sacred vows and their life-saving mission. “We are consecrated religious Sisters,” she explained, “and have one mission – to provide comfort and skilled care to persons dying of cancer who cannot afford nursing care.”

The Sisters have been left with no choice but to fight back, filing a lawsuit against Governor Kathy Hochul and her administration. They seek protection for their religious freedom and the right to continue serving the most vulnerable members of society without being penalized for their beliefs.

The situation is particularly stark when considering a peculiar exemption within the law. Long-term care facilities affiliated with the Christian Science Church *are* granted religious exemptions, while similar Catholic facilities are denied the same consideration. This disparity underscores what the Sisters see as a targeted attack on their faith.

Sister Stella Mary, Administrator of Rosary Hill Home, recalled the words of their foundress, Mother Alphonsa Hawthorne: to provide comfort and happiness to those “to pass from one life to another.” She affirmed their unwavering commitment to this sacred obligation, but stressed the urgent need for legal relief to continue their ministry unhindered.

This isn’t simply a legal battle; it’s a profound moral challenge. It’s a question of whether compassion and faith can coexist with ideological mandates, and whether a sanctuary dedicated to selfless service will be allowed to continue its vital work, offering dignity and peace to those facing their final days.
