The couple had allegedly used their passports to fly from Vancouver to Mexico City, and then onward to Havana, Cuba, carrying $10,000 in cash.
The reason for the flight ignited immediate fears. Investigators quickly suspected the couple intended to take the boy for irreversible medical procedures – gender reassignment surgery before puberty – against his mother’s wishes and without legal authorization. Family members expressed deep concern that the child’s identity was being manipulated.
