BODY SNATCHER NIGHTMARE: Remains Thief Faces Justice!

BODY SNATCHER NIGHTMARE: Remains Thief Faces Justice!

A chilling case unfolded in a Pennsylvania courtroom Friday as Jonathan Gerlach, 34, waived his right to a preliminary hearing, deepening the mystery surrounding the theft of over 100 sets of human remains. Gerlach, appearing in a stark lime green prison jumpsuit, was almost unrecognizable compared to his initial booking photo – clean-shaven and with his hair neatly tied back.

The charges against Gerlach are staggering: nearly 500 counts including burglary, abuse of a corpse, and the desecration of monuments. These stem from a disturbing investigation centered around Mount Moriah Cemetery, a historic burial ground near Philadelphia, where a macabre discovery shattered the peace.

While prosecutors dropped two burglary charges, they simultaneously added new counts linked to alleged break-ins at cemeteries in Lancaster and Luzerne counties, broadening the scope of the investigation. The sheer scale of the alleged crimes continues to shock investigators and the community alike.

The case first came to light in January, with authorities describing the scene as “a horror movie come to life.” Detectives recovered a horrifying collection of full and partial human remains – some centuries old, others belonging to infants – from Gerlach’s home in Ephrata and a rented storage unit.

Police initially focused on Gerlach after spotting bones and skulls within his vehicle while conducting surveillance at Mount Moriah Cemetery. He was later observed leaving the grounds carrying a burlap bag, a crowbar, and other tools, further fueling their suspicions.

Gerlach allegedly confessed to stealing approximately 30 sets of remains, but investigators believe the true number is far higher, exceeding 100. The implications of this theft are deeply unsettling, particularly for families with loved ones interred at Mount Moriah.

“I believe their souls are in heaven. I still think it’s disruptive,” shared Judy Prichard McCleary, whose ancestors’ remains were disturbed by the alleged actions. Her words capture the profound emotional toll this case has taken on those connected to the cemetery.

Currently, Gerlach remains incarcerated in Delaware County, with bail set at $1 million. Court records offer no indication of a plea, and his legal representation remains unclear. The investigation continues, promising further revelations in this unsettling case.
