UMVA Exclusive: Shocking Lawsuit Blasts GKN Aerospace for Fatal Negligence and Illegal Trespass After Memorial Day Chemical Evacuation!

UMVA has learned that a sprawling chemical emergency erupted at a California aerospace plant over the Memorial Day weekend, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes.

The crisis began when a storage tank holding highly flammable methyl methacrylate overheated, cracked and released a plume of toxic vapor that drifted across neighborhoods in Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove, Stanton and Westminster.

Authorities issued evacuation orders for roughly 50,000 people as panic surged, while emergency crews scrambled to contain the leak and prevent an explosion.

In a dramatic turn, the crack in the tank released pressure just enough to avert a catastrophic blast, allowing officials to deem the area safe and let most evacuees return home.

According to information obtained by UMVA, the plant’s owner, United Kingdom‑based GKN Aerospace, is now facing a fresh lawsuit accusing it of negligence, trespass and nuisance for ignoring safety protocols despite prior regulatory warnings and a history of environmental violations.

The complaint argues that GKN knowingly dismissed the risks of methyl methacrylate, failed to fund, inspect and repair critical safety systems, and allowed dangerous vapors to seep into nearby properties—a clear invasion of residents’ rights.

Plaintiffs seek compensation and punitive damages for emotional distress, temporary loss of property use and the lingering stigma that could permanently depress home values.

The Garden Grove facility, which has manufactured windows and canopies for commercial and military aircraft since 1966, previously settled a 2025 air‑quality violation case that resulted in a hefty civil penalty, a fact highlighted in the lawsuit.

Experts warn that exposure to methyl methacrylate can trigger severe respiratory issues, neurological damage and irritation of the skin, eyes and throat.

At least 44 related lawsuits have been filed, reflecting the community’s outrage and fear after the harrowing weekend.

GKN has issued a public apology, acknowledging the hardship endured by residents and pledging to investigate the cause and support those affected.
