SENATOR'S HAMAS SYMPATHY EXPLODES: Career on the Brink?

SENATOR'S HAMAS SYMPATHY EXPLODES: Career on the Brink?

A crucial Senate race in Maine is facing a storm of controversy as past online comments by leading progressive candidate Graham Platner resurface, threatening to derail his campaign and potentially shift the balance of power in Washington.

Platner, a decorated Marine and Army veteran with four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, is now under intense scrutiny for remarks made years ago on Reddit. Archived posts reveal he praised the military tactics employed by Hamas during a 2014 raid that resulted in the deaths of Israeli soldiers, describing it as a “well executed and successful small unit raid.”

The comments, unearthed by reports, show Platner dismissing concerns over the killing of Israeli soldiers, stating that from a “strictly professional standpoint,” the raid was “damn fine looking and successful.” This stance has ignited a firestorm of criticism, particularly given his current position as a prominent voice in the Democratic party.

This isn’t the first time Platner’s past has come under the microscope. Previous controversies include deeply troubling comments regarding sexual assault, and a chest tattoo initially resembling a Nazi symbol – a design he later claimed to have been unaware of and subsequently covered up.

Platner has publicly apologized for the offensive Reddit posts, expressing deep regret for the pain they have caused. He attributes some of his earlier views to the “hyper-masculine, hyper-violent” culture he experienced during his military service, suggesting a crude sense of humor and a narrow perspective shaped his opinions at the time.

However, this explanation has been met with fierce pushback from fellow veterans. Republican lawmakers with extensive military backgrounds have vehemently rejected the notion that such views are representative of American service members, calling his justifications unacceptable.

The timing of these revelations is particularly damaging. Platner is currently the frontrunner in the Democratic primary, backed by influential figures like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The winner of that primary will challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in November, a race Democrats see as vital to regaining control of the Senate.

Beyond the Reddit posts, Platner has also publicly criticized Israeli actions in Gaza, labeling them as genocide and condemning U.S. military support for Israel. He argues that history will judge leaders for failing to protect innocent lives, and calls for a shift in power towards those who reject the “mass slaughter of children.”

As the campaign intensifies, Platner’s past continues to haunt him, raising serious questions about his judgment and values. The controversy threatens to overshadow his message of change and could ultimately determine the fate of a Senate seat – and with it, the future of the chamber itself.
