Progressive candidates challenge Democratic establishment in 2026 midterms

Recent primary victories by far‑left candidates in New York City and Colorado have shifted national attention to upcoming Democratic contests in the Midwest, where progressive challengers aim to expand their influence.

In Denver’s solidly Democratic 1st District, first‑time candidate Melat Kiros defeated 15‑term incumbent Diana DeGette, prompting former Rep. Cori Bush to declare that St. Louis could see a similar upset on August 4.

Progressive groups backing these wins—including the Democratic Socialists of America, Justice Democrats and the Working Families Party—have framed the results as a mandate for policies such as Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, higher taxes on the wealthy and the abolition of ICE.

Beyond Colorado, the far‑left is targeting Missouri’s St. Louis‑anchored 1st District, where Bush seeks to reclaim her seat, and Michigan, where a primary on August 4 will decide the party’s direction.

In Wisconsin’s August 11 primary, state Rep. Francesca Hong, supported by the DSA, joins a crowded field to succeed retiring Gov. Tony Evers, signaling the movement’s westward push.

Several high‑profile races feature candidates endorsed by these progressive coalitions: Charles Booker in Kentucky’s Senate race, Bob Brooks in Pennsylvania’s 7th District, and Connie Chan in California’s 11th District, each seeking to unseat or replace incumbents in competitive or safe Democratic seats.

Notable congressional primary winners include Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York’s 13th District, Alissa Ellman in New York’s 24th, and Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania’s 3rd, all backed by the Justice Democrats or Working Families Party.

Former cabinet secretary Deb Haaland, now the Democratic nominee for New Mexico governor, heads a slate of progressive candidates considered favorites in their respective general elections.

Other progressive incumbents poised for re‑election include Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez in New York’s 14th, Ilhan Omar in Minnesota’s 5th, and Rashida Tlaib in Michigan’s 12th, each backed by multiple left‑leaning organizations.

The upcoming November contests will test whether the momentum generated by recent primary upsets can translate into broader electoral success against Republican opponents and determine the future trajectory of the Democratic Party.
