Michigan Democratic Senator Backs Successor in Heated Primary Contest

Michigan Democratic Senator Backs Successor in Heated Primary Contest

Retiring Senator Gary Peters has announced his endorsement of U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary, reversing his previous stance of neutrality. Peters, who is retiring after two terms, stated that Stevens "will be ready on day one to fight for Michigan." This move is seen as a significant development in the high-stakes primary, where party leaders are rallying to support Stevens over progressive rival Abdul El-Sayed.

Democrats are eager to maintain control of the Michigan seat as they strive to regain the Senate majority. Many party leaders have thrown their support behind Stevens, a four-term congresswoman, citing her as a stronger general election candidate. Stevens has focused her campaign on issues such as manufacturing, jobs, and Michigan's auto industry, while El-Sayed has run on a more progressive platform that includes "Medicare-for-all" and campaign finance reform.

Peters' endorsement comes after state Sen. Mallory McMorrow ended her campaign, leaving Stevens and El-Sayed as the only major Democratic candidates in the race. Stevens welcomed the endorsement, stating that Peters knows what it takes to win in Michigan and what the state needs from its next U.S. Senator. Peters has won two Senate elections in Michigan and previously chaired the Senate Democrats' campaign committee.

The campaign has become increasingly personal in recent weeks, with El-Sayed criticizing Stevens over outside spending supporting her campaign and Stevens accusing El-Sayed of refusing to release his personal financial records. The Democratic nominee will likely face Republican Mike Rogers in the general election, which is expected to be one of the most expensive and closely watched Senate contests in November.

Michigan has taken on added importance for Democrats after turmoil erupted in another key Senate race in a neighboring state. The unexpected vacancy has complicated the party's efforts to challenge a Republican senator, increasing the pressure to avoid setbacks in other battleground states such as Michigan. The Democratic primary is scheduled to take place on August 4, and the outcome will have significant implications for the party's chances of regaining the Senate majority.
