New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the 1993 film that launched the Jurassic Park franchise, died at the age of 78. The loss was described as sudden and unexpected by his family.
Neill had recently celebrated a cancer-free status following treatment for stage‑three blood cancer. He had shared his recovery in an interview, expressing excitement that the disease had been cleared.
In addition to the original Jurassic Park, Neill appeared in its sequels released in 2001 and 2002. His career also included notable performances in The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon, and The Horse Whisperer.
Born in 1947 in Northern Ireland, Neill moved to New Zealand at the age of seven. He adopted the name Sam early in life to avoid confusion with classmates sharing the same first name.
He is survived by four children and eight grandchildren, who have requested privacy during this difficult time.
