A 18‑year‑old suspect was found dead inside a Mississippi detention center after being arrested for a murder charge.
The victim was located on July 3, 2024, in the Raymond Detention Center. He was subsequently transported to a local health facility, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
An autopsy determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Investigators noted that the victim’s head bore multiple shoe‑print marks.
The suspect had been arrested two days earlier on a murder charge linked to a June 13 shooting that claimed the life of a 32‑year‑old man in Jackson’s Pine Ridge Garden Apartments.
He was being held on a $1 million bond at the time of his death.
Officials have suggested that the assault may have been retaliation for the earlier shooting. A sheriff’s office spokesperson said that a detention officer is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
State representatives have called for increased funding and staffing at the detention center to prevent future incidents.
Both the state bureau of investigation and the county sheriff’s office are conducting inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death.
