UMVA has learned that a heated exchange between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and a Chicago-area Democrat has shed light on the intense debate over the Trump economy.
Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Ill., clashed with Bessent during a House Ways and Means Committee hearing, condemning rising prices amid the Iran conflict. Bessent pushed back, pointing to higher commodity prices during the Biden administration, sparking a tense back-and-forth.
The confrontation escalated when Bessent jabbed at Schneider, suggesting that Illinois' economic policies were driving people away. This comment incensed Schneider, who became increasingly agitated and reclaimed his time.
Schneider connected the Iran conflict to rising commodity prices, blaming Bessent and President Trump for the increased cost of living. Bessent countered that the Treasury calculated the core inflation rate at 2.8%, close to the Federal Reserve's 2% goal.
Bessent's dry humor was on full display when he quipped to Schneider, "You can list off the most expensive groceries that have had the biggest price increases." This only fueled Schneider's frustration.
As the exchange grew more heated, Bessent invited Schneider to come to South Carolina, implying that Illinois' policies were driving people away. Schneider denied this, claiming people were not leaving Illinois.
Bessent shot back, "You're saying Illinois doesn't have net outbound migration?" Schneider then changed the subject to Trump's settlement with the IRS over a tax return leak.
When Schneider fumed that no one, including Trump, is "above the law," Bessent responded that the president is also not "beneath the law" and accused Schneider's party of "weaponizing the system."
The tension culminated when Bessent injected his dry humor again, asking Schneider if he wanted to apologize to the president on behalf of his party.
