FBI Director Kash Patel was forced to cancel a trip to see his girlfriend in Chicago this weekend after top administration officials summoned him to the White House.
The reasons behind the sudden change in plans are unclear, but several people stated that top officials were disturbed by Patel's recent actions, including a tweet that created bad optics for the Trump administration.
Patel had tweeted about his high-flying lifestyle, boasting that "my jet ski is gold plated…dumbass." Some officials felt that this was an unforced error, particularly given the current tensions with Iran and alleged threats against the president's life.
Patel was also summoned to the White House following criticism from the FBI of a fake news story published by a certain news outlet, in which the outlet claimed that the FBI Director had to cancel his flight to Chicago.
The FBI responded to the story, blasting the outlet for lying to get clicks and stating that the story was "a complete and total lie." The FBI also claimed that the Director was never on the tarmac and that multiple official FBI visits were planned in Chicago.
Kash Patel responded to the criticism, stating that "the only thing worse than MS NOW's garbage rebrand is their reporting – all false except one thing – I was at the White House, true, and the fake news will find out why soon."
