Mindanao Rail pre-feasibility study completed for project’s third phase

Mindanao Rail pre-feasibility study completed for project’s third phase

A colossal undertaking, the Mindanao Railway project – a promise of connection and prosperity – is surging forward with a critical step: a full-blown feasibility study. The Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Public-Private Partnership Center, is dedicating itself to rigorously examining the project’s potential.

The Public-Private Partnership Center, through its Project Development and Monitoring Facility, has already laid the groundwork with a preliminary assessment. This pre-feasibility study, meticulously crafted, now serves as the foundation for a deeper dive into the project’s future.

The DoTr, the driving force behind this ambitious endeavor, is preparing to embark on a comprehensive feasibility study. This isn’t simply a review; it’s a meticulous process to solidify the project’s technical soundness, financial stability, and overall economic impact.

Only the third phase of this sprawling railway network is currently being pursued through a solicited Public-Private Partnership. This phase, a 61-kilometer artery of connectivity, will weave its way through the heart of Mindanao.

Imagine a corridor linking the bustling industrial and commercial centers of Cagayan de Oro – a vital connection poised to reshape the region’s economic landscape. This is the core of Phase 3’s vision.

The estimated cost of this transformative project? A staggering P100.64 billion. This investment represents a significant commitment to the future of Mindanao’s transportation infrastructure.

More than just a railway line, this project will forge a vital link between Laguindingan International Airport, the vibrant port of Cagayan de Oro City, and the crucial Mindanao Container Port. These connections will unlock unprecedented opportunities for trade and travel.

Transportation Undersecretary Timothy R. Batan confirms that the DoTr, alongside the Asian Development Bank, is simultaneously refining the feasibility study for the initial phase of the Mindanao Railway. This dual effort underscores the project’s importance and the commitment to its success.

A pivotal shift has occurred: the Philippines has strategically moved away from seeking funding from China for the first phase of the railway – the South Long-Haul and Subic-Clark lines. This decision reflects a renewed focus on securing reliable and sustainable financing.

Recognizing the need for a modern and environmentally conscious approach, the DoTr is meticulously revising the original study. The goal is to create a railway system that not only meets the region’s needs but also prioritizes sustainability and responsible development.

The Mindanao Railway project – a testament to ambition and strategic planning – is steadily gaining momentum, promising to reshape the economic and social fabric of Mindanao for generations to come.
