A troubling account has surfaced alleging a deeply inappropriate encounter involving Congressman Jimmy Gomez, a Democrat married to his wife. The incident reportedly occurred during a private party hosted by former Congressman Eric Swalwell in the summer of 2023, just as Congress began its August recess.
Multiple sources claim Gomez was observed intimately with a significantly younger congressional aide. Witnesses described a scene unfolding near Swalwell’s home, as guests departed the event, with the two allegedly “making out” in plain view, though not entirely discreetly.
The aide, employed by a different House Democrat, is said to be more than twenty years Gomez’s junior. One witness detailed seeing them on the hood of a car, engaged in a passionate embrace visible to several departing guests.
A spokesperson for Congressman Gomez vehemently denied the allegations, dismissing the reports as entirely untrue. The aide involved has remained silent, declining to comment when approached for a statement.
Beyond the initial eyewitness accounts, a third source indicated hearing the story corroborated by several other Democrats, claiming firsthand knowledge of the incident. This suggests a wider awareness of the alleged encounter within congressional circles.
Gomez had long been associated with Swalwell, belonging to an informal group known as the “Cool Kids Clique,” a social circle characterized by frequent gatherings and socializing. This connection is now under intense scrutiny given the recent allegations against Swalwell.
Swalwell’s recent resignation from Congress and suspension of his gubernatorial campaign followed multiple accusations of sexual misconduct, ranging from harassment to rape. At least five women have come forward with disturbing allegations against him.
One former staffer detailed alleged sexual assaults, claiming Swalwell acted while she was incapacitated by intoxication. Swalwell has denied all accusations, and his attorney has issued a blanket denial of every claim.
Following the emergence of the allegations against Swalwell, Gomez swiftly distanced himself, resigning from his co-chair position on Swalwell’s campaign and describing the reports as deeply disturbing. He characterized them as “the ugliest and most serious accusations imaginable.”
While consensual relationships between members of Congress and staff not under their direct supervision aren’t explicitly prohibited by ethics rules, concerns are mounting about a pervasive culture of misconduct. One source described the behavior as “open philandering” and long overdue for address.
This source emphasized the inherent power imbalance that exists, arguing that even relationships with staffers from other offices create an environment ripe for abuse. The question of whether such behavior should be grounds for expulsion is being actively debated.
The situation echoes recent events involving other members of Congress. Representative Tony Gonzales resigned facing an expulsion vote related to an affair with a staffer who tragically died by suicide, and Representative Cory Mills is currently under ethics investigation for a similar alleged affair.
Since the initial report surfaced, Congressman Gomez and his office have remained silent, offering no further statements. The aide at the center of the allegations has also not publicly addressed the claims.
