Republican Congressman Discloses Illness That Kept Him Out of Session for Four Months

Republican Congressman Discloses Illness That Kept Him Out of Session for Four Months

Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R‑N.J., delivered an emotional address on the House floor Tuesday, disclosing a medical condition that kept him away for nearly four months. He explained that the diagnosis came after a hospital admission for testing.

Doctors identified depression as the underlying issue, and the illness required an extended stay under medical care. Kean said the recovery process lasted several months.

He expressed gratitude for accepting help, stating he now feels stronger, healthier, and ready to resume his work. The lawmaker emphasized his excitement to return to the duties he loves.

Kean, 57, returned to Washington this week after being absent since early March. His absence resulted in 140 missed roll‑call votes, a 100 % absence rate.

During his recovery his office repeatedly indicated a short‑term return, but timelines shifted as his health improved more slowly than expected. The delays reflected uncertainty about his full recovery.

Kean explained that early estimates were based on doctors’ best guesses, noting that recovery from depression lacks a fixed timetable. He highlighted that many Americans face similar uncertainties.

He kept the specifics of his condition private while recuperating, promising full transparency upon his return. House Republican leadership also lacked details until the speech.

His return adds a vote to the Republican caucus, which holds a narrow majority as Speaker Mike Johnson seeks to pass a defense authorization bill this week. The additional seat strengthens the party’s legislative position.

Johnson said the revelation would likely draw empathy and encouraged Kean’s openness, noting the condition is not uncommon. He praised Kean for his transparency during the absence.

Kean previously affirmed that his health issue does not impair his cognitive abilities or his decision to seek a third term. He assured constituents that his capacity to serve remains intact.

While away, his office continued to post updates, draft legislation, and enter remarks into the congressional record. These actions kept his legislative agenda active despite his physical absence.

The upcoming election presents a serious challenge from Democrat Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot backed by party establishment. Bennett is expected to emphasize her national‑security credentials.

Her campaign strategy mirrors a successful approach used by the state’s governor, focusing on experience in defense and foreign affairs. The tactic aims to resonate with swing‑district voters.

The suburban district is among the nation’s most competitive, with Democrats aggressively targeting the seat. The race is viewed as a pivotal contest in the midterm cycle.

Kean, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, faced no primary opponent, while the Cook Political Report rates the contest as a toss‑up. Both parties are mobilizing resources for the tightly contested showdown.
