A quiet Sunday evening in North York was shattered by a collision that sent three people, including an infant, to the hospital. The incident unfolded before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Glengrove Ave. W. and Caledonia Rd., drawing an immediate response from Toronto Police.
Initial reports indicated a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, but the full picture remained unclear in the immediate aftermath. Authorities confirmed a woman in her 30s, a man in his 20s, and a baby were rushed to a local hospital, their conditions initially described as unknown.
The situation quickly escalated as paramedics revealed the severity of the injuries. The infant suffered critical, potentially life-threatening trauma, while the woman also faced injuries deemed life-threatening. The man was hospitalized with serious, but non-life-threatening, wounds.
Adding to the complexity, paramedics reported treating a fourth individual at the scene for minor injuries, suggesting the possibility of multiple pedestrians being involved. The investigation focused on determining the circumstances surrounding the impact and the roles of those involved.
Meanwhile, further north in York Region, tragedy struck earlier that same day. A single-vehicle crash in East Gwillimbury claimed one life and critically injured four others. The collision occurred at the intersection of Doane Rd. and Leslie St., just west of Hwy. 404.
York Regional Police responded to the scene shortly after 12:35 a.m., finding a vehicle with five occupants. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining four were transported to hospital, three with life-threatening injuries and one with serious wounds.
Both investigations prompted significant road closures. Caledonia Rd. was shut down in both directions near Glengrove Ave. W., and Leslie St. in East Gwillimbury was closed for several hours as investigators meticulously examined the crash sites. Authorities urged drivers to avoid the areas and seek alternate routes.
As police continue to piece together the events of both incidents, they are appealing to the public for any information that might assist their investigations. Anyone with knowledge of either collision is encouraged to come forward and share what they know.
Elsewhere, authorities were also dealing with separate incidents, including a search for a 14-year-old boy following a fatal shooting inside a Hamilton mall, and an investigation by the OPP into a deadly crash on Hwy. 401 in Pickering involving a federal offender apprehended by the ROPE Squad.
