ALLY BETRAYAL: 69 Stripped of Rights in Iran Purge!

A wave of citizenship revocations swept through Bahrain this week, impacting dozens of individuals accused of expressing pro-Iran sentiment online. The move signals a dramatic escalation in the kingdom’s efforts to counter perceived threats to national security and loyalty.

Sixty-nine people, including family members, have lost their Bahraini nationality, accused of “glorifying” Iranian actions and maintaining connections with foreign entities. This action was carried out under a controversial law allowing the government to revoke citizenship based on security concerns, raising questions about due process and fundamental rights.

Bahrain’s government asserts the revocations target individuals of non-Bahraini origin – often naturalized citizens – who have allegedly harmed the kingdom’s interests. The decision follows a direct order from King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to aggressively address those deemed to have “betrayed the nation” or undermined its stability.

The crackdown coincides with heightened regional tensions following Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks throughout the Gulf, including strikes near U.S. military assets stationed in Bahrain. Officials frame the citizenship removals as a necessary step to suppress domestic support for Iran and disrupt suspected foreign networks.

Beyond the revocations, Bahrain has handed down severe sentences to individuals accused of espionage and supporting Iranian “terrorist acts.” Five people received life sentences, while twenty-five others were sentenced to ten years in prison, demonstrating the kingdom’s firm stance.

Bahrain and Iran have a long history of strained relations, with Bahrain accusing Iran of fueling unrest within its borders. The severance of diplomatic ties in 2016 underscores the deep-seated animosity, and Bahrain’s hosting of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet places it squarely in the path of regional conflict.

The crackdown extends beyond formal charges, encompassing arrests for sharing videos of Iranian strikes, posting pro-Iran content, or communicating with foreign groups. Authorities claim to have uncovered cells linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, allegedly tasked with gathering intelligence.

This isn’t an isolated incident; similar measures are being implemented across the Gulf. Hundreds have been arrested in neighboring countries, including the United Arab Emirates, for online activity deemed supportive of Iran, with authorities citing national security and public order concerns.

The tightening of citizenship rules on security grounds is becoming a regional trend. Kuwait, for example, has revoked the nationality of over 70,000 people since the beginning of the year, citing efforts to combat fraud, though the move raises similar concerns about fairness and legal safeguards.

Human rights organizations have sharply criticized Bahrain’s actions, warning of a “dangerous era of repression.” Concerns center on the lack of legal safeguards and the denial of the right to appeal, raising questions about the fairness and transparency of the process.
